of Terms
- Biomass: The total
weight of a plant material produced.
- Clone: In hybrid
poplars, a cutting from an original seedling plant that
maintains the identical genetic character of the original
ancestor.
- CRP: The Conservation
Reserve Program. A voluntary 10-year rental contract with
the USDA that will take highly erodible land out of crop
production and put it into perennial grass or trees.
- Cutting: An eight inch
to 12 inch section of stem section that is planted
directly into the soil.
- Glyphosate
(Roundup®): a nonselective herbicide that, when applied
post-emergence, is effective on many perennial grasses
and broadleaf weeds.
Glyphosate will also kill hybrid
poplars!
- ODT: Oven Dried Ton.
One ton of wood with 0 percent moisture. Volume equals
about one cord of wood.
- SRF: Short Rotation
Forestry. Growing trees as a crop, including site
preparation and management practices used in agriculture.
